There’s a certain pride in being a perpetual hobbyist. It’s about knowing a little something about everything, chasing new skills, and finding true enjoyment in the process. For me, it’s not about the negatives people like to point out. It’s about ownership. It’s about what I’ve done, what I’ve learned, and the joy that comes from constantly creating.
I’ll be honest: when I start a new project, I absolutely assume I can do anything without instructions. Lolol. And yes, I make mistakes. I backtrack. But those mistakes? They’re the hard lessons that make the rest of the project more fun. I learn early why I shouldn’t do certain things, and that makes the journey richer (at least that's what I tell myself).
And unfinished projects? What about them? They’ll be there when I’m ready. Imagine forcing yourself to finish something while hating every minute of it. That finished project will never bring joy if misery was baked into the process. I’d rather fold up my half‑crocheted blanket, tuck it into a bag with no notes on hook size or pattern, and come back later when the spark returns. When I do, it’ll bring joy… and probably frustration too, but finished, it will be everything I wanted it to be.
Being a perpetual hobbyist means embracing the chaos of 73 works in progress spread across 10 past hobbies. And that’s good. I can’t imagine the boredom of not constantly learning and doing. ADHD has its drawbacks, sure, but you can’t beat a good hyperfixation.
About ten years ago, I had a two‑year super focus where I wrote seven novels. A whole series. Will anyone ever read them? My anxiety could neverrrrr.. But for those two years, that was my life’s purpose, and it made me so damn happy.
That’s the energy every new hobby brings. Sometimes the drive lasts years, sometimes weeks. But I always come back. Because the main point is this: only do what you love when you love it. It’s not a hobby if you hate it.
So here’s to perpetual curiosity, unfinished projects, and the joy of learning the hard way.
👉 What about you? Do you have a half‑finished project that still makes you smile?
